Pickleball, the fastest growing sport across the country, continues to receive lots of media attention as more and more people are discovering the fun sport. An article in the New York Times over the Labor Day weekend described it as a "mash-up of tennis, badminton, and Ping-Pong" that is accessible to people of all ages and abilities. The September 2022 issue of Texas Monthly featured Austin-area entrepreneurs placing some big bets on the future of the sport. Not surprisingly, multiple venues are popping up across Austin to meet the increasing demand for both amateurs and professionals to have more court time. This article provides a guide to some of the local Austin venues that you can check out if you have not already found your favorite place to meet up with fellow "picklers".
Given my specialization in the luxury real estate market in west Austin, I will start with some of the pickleball opportunities in the west Austin area. For the ideal combination of wine, beer, great trailer food, and pickleball, a great place to visit is 5 Soul Wine and the Frontyard Brewing located on a ten-acre property off of Bob Wire Road in Spicewood. Check out their respective websites to schedule your game time on one of the six courts and get there early (or stay late) to enjoy their expansive sitting area designed for relaxation and socializing with friends and family while enjoying premium wines and craft beer. Next, Dreamland, one of the featured venues in the Texas Monthly article, is a sprawling sports complex located on 86 acres in Dripping Springs just southwest of the greater Austin area. Dreamland has sixteen premier pickleball courts, as well as disc golf, miniature golf and lots of activities for kids. Pickleball players can choose from a variety of leagues and play in numerous tournaments throughout the year. Another popular venue in the Bee Cave is Hill Country Indoor which has four indoor pickleball courts for use by both social and competitive leagues.
There are numerous other venues available throughout the Austin area that can be found online with the help of pickleball enthusiasts such as PickleHeads. In addition, new opportunities will be available with the opening of Austin Pickle Ranch in Spring 2023 which will offer thirty-three pickleball courts in a new complex in southeast Austin.
Hope you are able to check out these opportunities to get out there and have fun!
